Man with Van Rainham Health and Safety Policy

Man with Van Rainham is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transportation activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks and promoting safe working practices across all moving, loading, unloading and driving operations.

Our Health and Safety Commitment

We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying potential hazards and implementing sensible controls. Management and staff are required to take health and safety seriously and to integrate safe working methods into every task, from small item moves to full household or office removals.

We comply with applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry good practice. This policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains suitable for our services and operating areas.

Responsibilities for Health and Safety

Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with management, who ensure that adequate resources, time and training are provided to manage risks effectively. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for planning work safely, communicating procedures and checking that team members follow agreed methods.

Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must follow instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards or incidents promptly and co operate with any investigation or improvements required.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before each removal or transport job, we consider the specific risks associated with the type of items being moved, access points, parking arrangements, manual handling requirements and any special customer needs. Where necessary, a more detailed risk assessment is carried out and safe systems of work are agreed.

Examples of typical risk control measures include planning safe routes through properties, using appropriate lifting techniques, working in teams for heavy or awkward items, securing loads in vehicles and avoiding unnecessary time pressure that could encourage unsafe behaviour.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a core part of our removal activities and is managed carefully to reduce the risk of strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal injuries. Staff receive training in safe lifting techniques, including the importance of assessing weight and stability, using team lifts where necessary and avoiding twisting while carrying loads.

Where practicable, mechanical aids such as trolleys, dollies or straps are used to move heavy items. Staff are instructed to refuse to lift items that are beyond safe limits or that present an unacceptable risk without additional assistance or equipment.

Use of Equipment and Vehicles

All vehicles used for removals are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition. Regular checks are carried out on brakes, tyres, lights, securing points and access steps. Any defects or damage are reported immediately and addressed before the vehicle is used again.

Removal equipment, such as blankets, straps, ramps and trolleys, is inspected routinely. Only equipment that is in good condition and suitable for the task is used. Employees are trained to use equipment correctly and to secure loads properly to prevent movement during transit.

Working at Height and Access Safety

When accessing vehicles, steps or ramps, or when working on stairs and raised areas, particular care is taken to prevent slips, trips and falls. Walkways are kept as clear as reasonably practicable, and customers are asked to keep pets, children and unnecessary personal items away from areas where lifting or carrying is in progress.

Where work at height cannot be avoided, it is planned and carried out using appropriate methods and under supervision. Improvised or unsafe access methods are not permitted.

Customer and Public Safety

We plan our operations to minimise risks to customers, neighbours and the general public. Where possible, loading and unloading are arranged to reduce obstruction to pavements, driveways and shared spaces. Staff are instructed to be alert to moving vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians when operating near roads or shared access areas.

Customers are given clear guidance on staying clear of lifting operations and vehicle loading zones. We may temporarily restrict access to certain areas while heavy or bulky items are being moved to ensure no one is placed at risk.

Training, Information and Supervision

All staff receive induction training covering our health and safety expectations, safe lifting, vehicle safety, incident reporting and the correct use of equipment. Additional task specific training is provided where required, for example for handling fragile, high value or unusually heavy items.

Supervision is provided appropriate to the level of experience of the team and the complexity of the job. Less experienced staff work under closer supervision until they demonstrate consistent understanding of safe working practices.

Incident Reporting and Investigation

All accidents, near misses, injuries, damage to property and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible to management. We investigate incidents to understand their causes and to identify any lessons that can be applied to prevent recurrence.

Findings from investigations may lead to changes in procedures, additional training, new equipment or other corrective actions. We encourage an open culture in which staff feel able to report concerns without fear of blame, so that risks can be addressed proactively.

Welfare and Fitness for Work

We recognise that physical fitness, adequate rest and hydration are important to performing removal work safely. Staff are expected to attend work fit for duty and to inform management of any health conditions or medication that might affect their ability to carry out certain tasks safely.

We do not tolerate working under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs. Where prescription medication may impair judgement or physical ability, duties may be adjusted in consultation with the individual.

Continuous Improvement

Man with Van Rainham is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. This policy is reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to our services, equipment or operating methods. Feedback from staff and customers is welcomed and is used to refine our approach to keeping people, property and goods safe throughout every stage of a move.
